DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024 from 2:00-4:30PM for the exhibition reception of Rebecca Bair: Where the Light Meets My Shoulder at the Art Gallery at Evergreen. We will also celebrate the release of the essay brochure that accompanies the exhibition. This colour brochure includes a poetic response by artist Erika DeFreitas that captures the essence of Bair’s artistic intentions when sharing her work within community. The brochure will be available for purchase ($5.00 + GST). \nLight refreshments will be served. Remarks will take place at 3PM. This event is wheelchair accessible. Pay parking available on-site\, easy access from Lafarge Lake-Douglas College Skytrain Station. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION\nWhere the Light Meets My Shoulder is a solo exhibition of recent work by interdisciplinary artist Rebecca Bair. While primarily working with photography\, Bair uses a multitude of mediums to expand the possibilities of representation. Over the past five years\, the artist has developed a style that reflects her experience as a Black woman living on Turtle Island. Her work upends how Blackness is often (mis)represented and honours the complex\, varying experiences of people of African descent. Bair tenderly gathers symbols of Blackness that are specific to her as an individual and that embody a deep love and care for herself\, her community and her heritage. Using recurring imagery of her coily hair\, the sun\, shadows and circles\, Bair plays with abstraction to negotiate what can be seen and what is withheld.

Their comedy is feminist\, it’s fast\, it’s fun\, and it’s the result of years of being silly gooses together. Cherished by many\, the Goldberg Variations are emblematic of keyboard virtuosity\, rich expression\, and hardcore classical interpretation. Sarah will offer a short introduction to this marvellous and intense piece before playing the full work. \nABOUT SARAH HAGEN\nAwarded as Artist of the Year by both Ontario Contact (2017) and the BC Touring Council (2015)\, and mentioned by The Guardian (Charlottetown) as the Best Classical Performance of 2014\, pianist Sarah Hagen’s interpretations have been described as “outstandingly inventive” [University of Waterloo Gazette]\, ”played flawlessly” [ReviewVancouver]. Her extensive touring has taken her across Canada\, to Sweden\, France\, Germany and Italy\, and twice to New York City’s Carnegie Hall. Sarah released an album of Goldberg Variations in 2021. Her third album\, Women of Note\, highlights two forgotten female composers of the 18th century\, and garnered the 2021 Music PEI Instrumental Recording of the Year as well as two ECMA nominations. Sarah’s debut solo album\, Glass House Dancing\, was nominated for Classical Recording of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards. Her second album\, Devoted: Music of Robert & Clara Schumann\, features solo piano works and Clara Schumann’s Romances\, Opus 22 with violinist Martin Chalifour\, concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
