DESCRIPTION:Come in from the cold to spend an evening ‘In Winter’s House’ with vocal ensemble musica intima. Centering around Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s ‘A Winter Breviary\,’ the program traces a journey towards the longest night of the year\, the solstice\, and honours the dark while celebrating the return of the light. \nThrough music of Sherryl Sewepagaham\, Juhi Bansal\, Joanna Marsh\, and the late Jocelyn Morlock – and arrangements of familiar tunes by Joanna Forbes\, Canadian folk trio The O’Pears\, Trombone Shorty\, and ensemble members – the ensemble will welcome the dawning light to illumine the darkness.  Known for their thoughtful programming and flawless execution\, the voices of musica intima will warm your heart. \nABOUT MUSICA INTIMA\nFounded in 1992\, musica intima is a collaborative and conductor-less vocal ensemble which has championed Canadian music on stages around the world\, and garnered a Western Canadian Music Award and three JUNO Award nominations across ten commercially released albums. Their most recent collaboration with Cree composer Andrew Balfour\, NAGAMO\, seeks to forge a new path towards the decolonization of the choral arts. \nGrassroots beginnings took musica intima to international renown by pushing the boundaries of traditional choral performance and offering new perspectives on ensemble singing.  One of Canada’s most esteemed vocal ensembles\, musica intima’s shared leadership model allows the twelve members to exchange ideas freely and  explore their individual musical creativity. \nAs musica intima seeks to decolonize their musical practice\, they increasingly turn to collaborations with Indigenous artists from a variety of disciplines\, including choreographer Olivia C. Davies\, visual artist Sonny Assu\, the lexwst’í:lem Drum Group\, Indigenous ethnobotanist and artist T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, and composers Sherryl Sewepagaham and Andrew Balfour.
