SUMMARY:Cocktail Concerts: Alpha Yaya Diallo - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Cocktail Hour 6:30PM | Concert 7:30PM \nGuitarist and singer Alpha Yaya Diallo\, from Guinea in West Africa\, is one of the hottest acts on the world music scene. Now based in Canada\, he’s earned a matchless reputation for the excellence of his musicianship and the excitement of his live shows – whether performing solo or with his band Bafing. Diallo is a multi-talented artist. His dexterous acoustic and electric guitar-playing\, with its fluid melodic lines and compelling grooves\, places him in the front ranks of African axemen. In addition\, he’s a skilled and experienced performer on a variety of percussion instruments\, and on the balafon (traditional marimba). To cap it off\, Diallo writes all his own compositions and sings with a supple\, high\, and beautifully modulated voice. \nBy successfully uniting the traditional and the contemporary in African music\, Diallo has carved out a niche beside such luminaries as Salif Keita\, Baaba Maal\, Youssou N’Dour\, and Mory Kante. Always seeking new territories to explore while at the same time respecting his roots\, Alpha Yaya Diallo is one of the most inspired and inspirational world music artists performing anywhere. \nALL TICKETS JUST $55! | Includes 1 Cocktail or Mocktail\nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555

SUMMARY:Summer Cocktail Concerts: Queer as Funk! - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Cocktail Hour 6:30PM | Concert 7:30PM \nNot your typical dance band\, Queer As Funk are part-advocates\, part-funk-revivalists\, and have been turning stages into dance floors and audiences into family for over a decade. As one of the few predominantly queer bands in Canada\, they offer more than just a great night out: at their core\, Queer As Funk uses music as a tool for visibility\, pride\, and the radical celebration of the queer experience. \nBorn from a desire to bring vibrant funk and soul to Vancouver’s queer community\, Queer As Funk is dedicated to gathering and taking up space—especially in smaller or more isolated areas. The band has become a beacon in the 2SLGBTQI+ community\, putting on high-energy live shows where diversity is celebrated and all are welcome. \nQueer As Funk has played stages across Canada\, including six sold-out headlining shows at Vancouver’s legendary Commodore Ballroom—a venue that has hosted legends like Tina Turner and David Bowie. In recognition of their impact\, they’ve even been ordained as saints by the worldwide ‘Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’\, for “creating positive changes in our world by honoring the Mind\, Body\, and Spirit.” The group’s individual members are consummate musicians in their own right\, having collectively performed with artists like Serena Ryder\, Tegan and Sara\, Dan Mangan\, and Ken Boothe. \nBringing fresh takes to beloved classics in funk\, soul\, and Motown\, Queer As Funk’s powerful vocals\, tight horn arrangements\, and irresistible rhythm section make each performance as groovy as it is fun. Their arrangements are creative\, their vibe is pure celebration\, and their love for each other is palpable\, adding depth to the onstage dynamic that models the concept of chosen family.”\nALL TICKETS JUST $55! /Includes 1 Cocktail or Mocktail \n

SUMMARY:Shane Koyczan: Spoken Word Artist - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:SHANE KOYCZAN: SPOKEN WORD ARTIST\nInternationally recognized author and spoken word artist Shane Koyczan has emerged as a creator of poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice. \nThere are some artists who happen to be in the right place at the right time… that moment when the door is still slightly open and there’s just enough space to sneak through. Then there are those artists who find themselves standing in front of a closed door\, but instead of waiting for it to open they kick it in to go through. In the rise of Spoken Word’s popularity\, that open door cannot be discussed without saying the name Shane Koyczan.\nIn 2010\, the world caught a glimpse of Koyczan’s prodigious talent with his presentation at the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. This stand-out performance helped shine a light on this street poet from Vancouver’s downtown east side. \nShane had been an artist\, inches away from living on the street\, who even in those troubled times was putting out work like To This Day\, a video that’s garnered 24 million views and is used worldwide in classrooms as a teaching tool\, as well in speech and forensic competitions. His second book\, Stickboy\, was adapted into an opera by Vancouver Opera. His voice has been sought after by luminaries like George Miller\, who worked with Shane on Mad Max: Fury Road. Koyczan also created the piece\, Shoulders\, which he toured with David Suzuki as part of The Blue Dot Tour. \nSINGLE TICKETS ON SALE:\nAdult: $41 | Senior: $37 | Student: $16 \nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555 | Open Monday – Saturday\, 12 – 5PM\nSave big on our Variety and Music Series performances with a Sampler Pack Subscription!

SUMMARY:Summer Cocktail Concerts: The Paperboys - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Cocktail Hour 6:30PM | Concert 7:30PM \nWhen you think of Canadian music\, who are the first contemporary artists that come to mind? \nIs it a globe-touring sextet that\, in a single set\, can be counted on to stomp through Celtic reels\, traditional Mexican folk\, fiddle tunes\, New Orleans brass band music\, classic pop songcraft\, bluegrass\, and even a philosophical waltz or two\, before bringing it all home with a Latino/West African singalong? Is it a fearless\, freewheeling band sometimes referred to as the “Los Lobos of Canada\,” veterans of an estimated 4\,300 shows since the band’s 1992 formation? \nWhat if I told you that this band doesn’t just exist—they flourish\, and have been converting full concert halls of indifferent strangers into devoted fans for the last 30 years? The name of this musical collective is The Paperboys. They are a Canadian treasure. The heart of The Paperboys is a trio of gifted songwriters and musicians: Founder Tom Landa\, a fedora-hatted vocalist/guitarist/bandleader who immigrated from Mexico to Canada in his teens; Kalissa Landa\, a lifelong fiddler/vocalist with a preternatural command of melody; and Spirit of the West’s flautist/guitarist/vocalist Geoffrey Kelly\, already a Canadian musical icon when he hopped on the P’boys bus in 1997. Though by no means a jam band\, The Paperboys reinvent their show every time they step onstage. Once the band agrees on the opening song\, there is no set list. The song finishes\, the crowd reacts\, Landa reads the room\, and the journey begins. Every night. The world has changed seismically since 1992\, but The Paperboys fan base has stuck with the band\, and grown. It goes beyond perseverance\,” Landa says about the band’s legacy\, “and into some kind of connectivity and resonance we have with people. We’ve created a community.” Though best known for their live show\, The Paperboys also have another ace up their sleeve: A deep and impressive discography. The band has released 10 recordings—including the Juno Award-winning Molinos—receiving accolades from MOJO Magazine and fRoots Magazine along the way. They’ve been two-time recipients of the West Coast Music Award\, composed scores for two films\, and been nominated for a Leo Award for best original song in the Hong Kong / Canada film release\, Lunch With Charles. Although perennially adored and praised by alternative media and national radio networks NPR and CBC\, commercial success has eluded the band. Undaunted\, The Paperboys have kept in perpetual motion\, building a cult following through the impact of its incendiary live show and proud DIY spirit. \nEven the pandemic couldn’t silence The Paperboys. Tom and Kalissa maintained a warm connection with their homebound fans by posting their now-legendary Slipper Sessions online\, playing gorgeous\, stripped-down versions of their repertoire\, with their kids and cats sometimes wandering through the margins of the videos. \n“There are many ways to define success\,” Landa says. “I get to make music with people I love\, tour and see the world\, and connect with people through song. I can hang my hat on that.” \nALL TICKETS JUST $49!\nPurchase tickets to all 3 Cocktail Concert events and receive 10% off!

SUMMARY:Summer Cocktail Concerts: Jim Byrnes - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Cocktail Hour 6:30PM | Concert 7:30PM \nJim Byrnes was born in St. Louis\, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band. As a teenager going to music clubs\, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. “We never had any problems. We were too naïve and had too much respect for the music and culture – they knew it\, they could tell.” \nBy age thirteen\, Jim was singing and playing blues guitar. His first professional gig was in 1964. Over the years\, he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues. From Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray\, Jim has been on the blues highway for 45 years. Byrnes moved to Vancouver\, BC in the mid-70s after years of drifting\, working odd jobs and playing music. In 1981 he put together a band that became a staple of the local music scene. In 1986 the Jim Byrnes Band played 300 nights. \nJim Byrnes’ fame as an actor has grown immeasurably from his too-numerous-to-mention TV and movie roles\, highlights including television’s Wiseguy and Highlander series\, and his national variety show The Jim Byrnes Show. Jim has proven that a serious car accident in 1972 has done anything but hinder him. Despite two swipes with death and some pretty hard knocks\, Byrnes has still managed to rack up an enviable string of credits\, both on and off-screen. \nALL TICKETS JUST $49!\nPurchase tickets to all 3 Cocktail Concert events and receive 10% off!

SUMMARY:musica intima - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Come in from the cold to spend an evening ‘In Winter’s House’ with vocal ensemble musica intima. Centering around Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s ‘A Winter Breviary\,’ the program traces a journey towards the longest night of the year\, the solstice\, and honours the dark while celebrating the return of the light. \nThrough music of Sherryl Sewepagaham\, Juhi Bansal\, Joanna Marsh\, and the late Jocelyn Morlock – and arrangements of familiar tunes by Joanna Forbes\, Canadian folk trio The O’Pears\, Trombone Shorty\, and ensemble members – the ensemble will welcome the dawning light to illumine the darkness.  Known for their thoughtful programming and flawless execution\, the voices of musica intima will warm your heart. \nABOUT MUSICA INTIMA\nFounded in 1992\, musica intima is a collaborative and conductor-less vocal ensemble which has championed Canadian music on stages around the world\, and garnered a Western Canadian Music Award and three JUNO Award nominations across ten commercially released albums. Their most recent collaboration with Cree composer Andrew Balfour\, NAGAMO\, seeks to forge a new path towards the decolonization of the choral arts. \nGrassroots beginnings took musica intima to international renown by pushing the boundaries of traditional choral performance and offering new perspectives on ensemble singing.  One of Canada’s most esteemed vocal ensembles\, musica intima’s shared leadership model allows the twelve members to exchange ideas freely and  explore their individual musical creativity. \nAs musica intima seeks to decolonize their musical practice\, they increasingly turn to collaborations with Indigenous artists from a variety of disciplines\, including choreographer Olivia C. Davies\, visual artist Sonny Assu\, the lexwst’í:lem Drum Group\, Indigenous ethnobotanist and artist T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss\, and composers Sherryl Sewepagaham and Andrew Balfour. DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed raconteur Ray Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana down to its essentials and steeps it in the humid grooves of the South\, creating a compelling poetry of hard living and deep feeling. His ninth release\, At King Electric\, delivers more than his trademark grit and groove. Songs such as “The Next Card to Fall” and “Codeine” gleam with intimate narratives of characters reaching for hope and wrestling with despair. Rich guitar and harmonica lines resonate over spare but spunky rhythms\, while Bonneville’s deep\, evocative voice confesses life’s harsh realities. \nOften called a “song and groove man\,” Bonneville has lived the life of the itinerant artist. From his native Quebec\, he moved to Boston at age twelve\, where he learned English and picked up piano and guitar. Later\, he served in Vietnam and earned a pilot’s license in Colorado before living in Alaska\, Seattle\, and Paris. Six years in New Orleans infused his musical sensibilities with the region’s culture and rhythms. And then\, a close call while piloting a seaplane proved pivotal: After two decades working as a studio musician\, playing rowdy rooms with blues bands\, and living hard\, Bonneville’s lifetime of hard-won experience coalesced into an urge to write his own music. \nRay recorded his first album\, On the Main\, in 1992. He’s since released nine albums\, earned wide critical and popular acclaim\, and won an enthusiastic following in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. His awards include a prestigious Juno\, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy\, for his 1999 album\, Gust of Wind. In 2012\, Ray won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge. His post-Katrina ode\, “I Am the Big Easy\,” earned the International Folk Alliance’s 2009 Song of the Year Award\, placed number one on Folk Radio’s list of most-played songs of 2008\, and was recently covered by Jennifer Warnes for the BMG label. \nOther notable artists who have recorded his songs include Ronnie Hawkins (“Foolish”) and Slaid Cleaves (“Run Jolee Run”). Ray has shared the bill with blues heavyweights Muddy Waters\, B.B. King\, Dr. John\, J.J. Cale\, and Robert Cray\, and has guested on albums by Mary Gauthier\, Gurf Morlix\, Eliza Gilkyson\, Ray Wylie Hubbard\, and other prominent musicians. He has performed at renowned venues around the world\, including South by Southwest\, Folk Alliance\, and Montreal International Jazz Festival\, and plays over 100 shows per year across the U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe. When not on the road\, he resides in Austin\, Texas. \nAdult: $37 | Senior: $34 | Student: $16 \nBOX OFFICE: 604.927.6555 | Open Monday – Saturday\, 12PM – 5PM

SUMMARY:Get Back Unplugged - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE SHOW\nIt’s been said that the sign of a great song is when it can stand on its own\, without any need for complex production. With the warmth of voices in five part harmony\, and the simple beauty of acoustic instruments\, Get Back Unplugged aims to revisit some of the best loved songs of late-period Beatles\, and to deliver them with the joy and spontaneity of friends singing around a kitchen table. Bringing together six stellar singers and players who\, between them\, have straddled the worlds of folk\, Celtic\, blues\, jazz\, and classical music. This intimate and fun performance does not try to imitate the Fab Four\, but rather seeks to present interpretations that are authentic to the musicians’ own unique voices. While they revere and respect the spirit of these classics\, the group embodies the kind of playful\, creative energy that the Beatles display in the studio\, even occasionally alluding to other genres such as fiddle music\, gypsy jazz\, and classical music as the spirit moves them.\nTICKETS ON SALE!\nAdult: $37 | Senior: $34 | Student: $16
