The Hitsville USA Band is a hard driving revue that truly captures the sharp wardrobe\, polished style and the soulful sounds of the Motown artists who transformed rhythm and blues music. \nThe show features stellar vocalists Mike Henry and Janelle Reid backed up by a pumping band. \nMike Henry began his professional career in Las Vegas in the 80s and has performed at numerous major resorts and casinos including Bally’s Park Place (Atlantic City)\, Trump Castle (Reno/Tahoe) and the MGM Grand (Vegas). He has toured internationally aboard both the Viking and Color Cruise Lines in addition to performances in Taiwan\, Hong Kong\, Bangkok and Dubai. Mike is leader of a variety of other projects including his Ray Charles tribute show and a variety of R&B\, Funk and Reggae bands including Mostly Marley. \nJanelle Reid is a singer\, actor\, songwriter and mover. She has a BFA double major in music composition and theatre and has a second bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She enjoys singing in a variety of genres and collaborating with other vocal artists. She is always excited to take the opportunities given to share her passion of singing as a means to bring people together. Is it a fearless\, freewheeling band sometimes referred to as the “Los Lobos of Canada\,” veterans of an estimated 4\,300 shows since the band’s 1992 formation? \nWhat if I told you that this band doesn’t just exist—they flourish\, and have been converting full concert halls of indifferent strangers into devoted fans for the last 30 years? The name of this musical collective is The Paperboys. They are a Canadian treasure. The heart of The Paperboys is a trio of gifted songwriters and musicians: Founder Tom Landa\, a fedora-hatted vocalist/guitarist/bandleader who immigrated from Mexico to Canada in his teens; Kalissa Landa\, a lifelong fiddler/vocalist with a preternatural command of melody; and Spirit of the West’s flautist/guitarist/vocalist Geoffrey Kelly\, already a Canadian musical icon when he hopped on the P’boys bus in 1997. Though by no means a jam band\, The Paperboys reinvent their show every time they step onstage. Once the band agrees on the opening song\, there is no set list. The song finishes\, the crowd reacts\, Landa reads the room\, and the journey begins. Every night. The world has changed seismically since 1992\, but The Paperboys fan base has stuck with the band\, and grown. It goes beyond perseverance\,” Landa says about the band’s legacy\, “and into some kind of connectivity and resonance we have with people. We’ve created a community.” Though best known for their live show\, The Paperboys also have another ace up their sleeve: A deep and impressive discography. The band has released 10 recordings—including the Juno Award-winning Molinos—receiving accolades from MOJO Magazine and fRoots Magazine along the way. They’ve been two-time recipients of the West Coast Music Award\, composed scores for two films\, and been nominated for a Leo Award for best original song in the Hong Kong / Canada film release\, Lunch With Charles. Although perennially adored and praised by alternative media and national radio networks NPR and CBC\, commercial success has eluded the band. Undaunted\, The Paperboys have kept in perpetual motion\, building a cult following through the impact of its incendiary live show and proud DIY spirit. \nEven the pandemic couldn’t silence The Paperboys. Tom and Kalissa maintained a warm connection with their homebound fans by posting their now-legendary Slipper Sessions online\, playing gorgeous\, stripped-down versions of their repertoire\, with their kids and cats sometimes wandering through the margins of the videos. \n“There are many ways to define success\,” Landa says. “I get to make music with people I love\, tour and see the world\, and connect with people through song. Her 2020 album release\, Out of Dust\, received rave reviews and was nominated for a 2021 JUNO Award. Laila was also honoured by SOCAN Music with the Hagood Hardy Award for Excellence in Songwriting. In 2019\, Laila’s eponymous release won her a JUNO Award (Canada’s GRAMMY) for “Vocal Jazz Album of the Year.” The year prior\, she was awarded top prize at the Canadian Songwriting Competition in the Jazz category. SUMMARY:Summer Cocktail Concerts: Jim Byrnes - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Cocktail Hour 6:30PM | Concert 7:30PM \nJim Byrnes was born in St. Louis\, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band. As a teenager going to music clubs\, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. “We never had any problems. We were too naïve and had too much respect for the music and culture – they knew it\, they could tell.” \nBy age thirteen\, Jim was singing and playing blues guitar. His first professional gig was in 1964. Over the years\, he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues. From Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray\, Jim has been on the blues highway for 45 years. Byrnes moved to Vancouver\, BC in the mid-70s after years of drifting\, working odd jobs and playing music. In 1981 he put together a band that became a staple of the local music scene. In 1986 the Jim Byrnes Band played 300 nights. \nJim Byrnes’ fame as an actor has grown immeasurably from his too-numerous-to-mention TV and movie roles\, highlights including television’s Wiseguy and Highlander series\, and his national variety show The Jim Byrnes Show. Jim has proven that a serious car accident in 1972 has done anything but hinder him. Over the years\, the Festival has grown into the largest Caribbean event on the local calendar. The festival attracts over 60\,000 people annually\, it is possibly the largest cultural event of its type in BC\, period.

DESCRIPTION:After a two year hiatus\, the Caribbean Days Festival had a successful return in 2022\, when it shifted from its long-time North Vancouver location to a new home in Coquitlam at Town Centre Park. \nFor 2023\, the Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of British Columbia is excited to announce the Caribbean Days Festival will be held at Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park\, in full force this July 29th & 30th\, 2023. \nCaribbean Days Festival is free to attend\, is open to all ages\, is wheelchair accessible and close to public transportation. Over the years\, the Festival has grown into the largest Caribbean event on the local calendar. The festival attracts over 60\,000 people annually\, it is possibly the largest cultural event of its type in BC\, period.
