SUMMARY:Senior's Week: Tea\, Tour & Textiles - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a private exhibition tour of “unearthed: Mitra Mahmoodi & Jamal Tabasinejad” at the Art Gallery at Evergreen\, followed by complimentary tea\, coffee\, and snacks in our lake-side lobby. Then take part in a textile craft-along inspired by your own creative practice and the gallery exhibition. Bring your own knitting\, crocheting\, and weaving projects\, or join our arts educator to learn basic needle felting and create a mini artwork. \nBy Donation. Pre-registration required. \nPlease note this event is for ages 50+. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION\nAdobe buildings—uncommon in the wet\, mild climate of British Columbia—are a fixture of Iranian desert architecture. This sophisticated and ancient architectural style uses sun-dried clay bricks to construct a diverse array of structures\, from humble domes to vast citadels and intricate ziggurats. The magic of adobe construction has captivated the imagination of two Iranian Canadian artists: painter Jamal Tabasinejad and ceramic artist Mitra Mahmoodi. Their joint exhibition delves into the artists’ shared fascination with adobe architecture\, with a focus on representation in painting and abstraction in sculpture.

SUMMARY:RISE Exhibition Tour - Art Gallery at Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 27 at 12:30PM | Free. Registration recommended and drop-in welcome. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/714915289877?aff=oddtdtcreator \nSaturday\, November 4 at 2PM  | Free. Registration recommended and drop-in welcome. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/714921959827?aff=oddtdtcreator \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nSandeep Johal’s art practice engages drawing\, collage\, textiles and large-scale murals. Through her Indo-folk feminine aesthetic\, she confronts themes of bleakness\, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness\, hope and beauty. Johal’s work typically centres around the stories of women’s resistance and resilience. \nSara Khan’s art practice focuses on watercolour painting and includes recent experimentation with textiles\, installations and murals. She reflects on the significance of the seemingly mundane aspects of daily life through her meticulous watercolour paintings\, which often feature fantastical\, uncanny creatures and veiled autobiographical references. \nSandeep Johal and Sara Khan’s artistic collaboration gives rise to a playful and fantastical environment. The artists merge their distinct creatures\, dynamic patterns and rich colour palettes into new hybrid forms. Their artworks celebrate the joy\, power and complexities of womanhood from their perspectives as two South Asian women artists who are mothers to young children. \nWe would like to acknowledge the BC Arts Council with support from the Province of British Columbia. \nRISE: Sandeep Johal and Sara Khan is on view at the Art Gallery at Evergreen from September 16–November 26\, 2023 .
