SUMMARY:Naadaleela Ensemble  - Evergreen Cultural Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Naadaleela Ensemble comes to Evergreen Cultural Centre to create a musical conversation between ancient cultures that span the Silk Road – from Iran to India and China – and which have been influencing each other for over 2\,000 years. Even though the group represents some of the largest cultural communities in BC\, very few projects feature such collaborations. Drawing on their training across a range of musical disciplines\, the musicians reach into and across lines of difference\, fusing together influences of South Indian\, Chinese\, Persian\, Taiwanese\, Indonesian\, western classical\, contemporary music\, and jazz. The result is a heady and aromatic offering. \nIn this concert\, you will hear a mixture of original music composed by the members of the ensemble. Musical and poetic strains dating from the Vedic period in India (1500 BCE) mixed with music that was composed in 2021. Instruments that were never conceived of playing together make beautiful harmony\, such as the Chinese zheng and the South Indian mridangam supporting the poetry of Sufi poet Rumi; or the Persian ney and Chinese erhu complementing the South Indian voice. Expect ornamented melodies\, soothing and invigorating rhythms\, and songs that will move you\, make you wonder\, and leave you smiling. \nABOUT THE ENSEMBLE\nThe Naadaleela Ensemble was born out a of desire to explore the common (and not-so-common) musical ground between the the music of the “Eastern” world. The group’s name is drawn from two Sanskrit words\, “naada” meaning sound and “leela” meaning play. Featuring acclaimed musicians from Iran\, South India\, Taiwan and North America\, the sounds of Persian and Indian classical music meet with those of China\, tempered with a tinge of North American jazz aesthetics. The group creates new musical works and explorations from its members as well as arrange existing repertoire from their various cultural backgrounds\, taking the listener on a fascinating musical journey. DESCRIPTION:A free event geared towards youth under 16 years of age\, the Como Lake Fishing Derby has prize giveaways and a pancake breakfast available for a nominal charge. The event is hosted by the Coquitlam Festival Society\, the Kinsmen Club of Coquitlam and the Port Coquitlam & District Hunting and Fishing Club. Hundreds of prizes are awarded each year for a variety of catches\, from the largest and smallest fish to the strangest catch of the day. The fishing derby attracts hundreds of children each year. As the children fish\, parents are welcome to enjoy a pancake breakfast cooked by the Coquitlam Kinsmen Club. Remember to bring your own fishing pole and bait. DESCRIPTION:Hilarious Hollywood stereotypes\, sizzling\, super-fast dialogue plus a rather suspect murder mystery colour this affectionate and brilliantly realised spoof\, written by one of Canada’s own most successful and popular playwrights\, Norm Foster. \nIt’s 1938 and Jeff Kincaid\, star reporter\, is falling down on the job of writing for a major newspaper.  Plucky young Mary arrives in the editor’s office to apply for a job.  Bosco\, the crusty editor\, sends her and Jeff out together to report on the upcoming weddings of a society mother and her rather strange son. If Jeff writes the better story\, he gets to keep his job. If Mary wins\, she will replace the ace newshound. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE SHOW \nThe Fretless is the Canadian ensemble playing an essential part in the emerging movement mainstreaming traditional music\, and connecting traditional styles with diverse audiences around the world. Through its deconstruction and transformation of the usual rhythmic\, harmonic and structured arrangements of fiddle styles around the world\, The Fretless is pushing traditional music to a new place\, and has now issued itself an atypical challenge in the mission to find and convert fans unfamiliar with “progressive” traditional music. \nStarting with their debut album in 2012\, the band has steadily pushed further into the public eye\, winning Instrumental Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and Instrumental Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Its 2014 tune “Waving To Ryan” has topped a million Spotify plays\, and in 2016\, The Fretless took home a JunoTM award for Instrumental Album of The Year for their album Bird’s Nest. 2018 saw the release of the band’s newest record\, “Live from the Art Farm”\, in which the band recorded ten all-new intricate arrangements in front of three microphones and an audience\, straight to tape.
