SUMMARY:Fraser Mills: Foundation of a Community - Mackin House
DESCRIPTION:The Ross McLaren Company began sawmill operations on the Fraser River in 1890\, beginning a company that was destined for economic ups and downs\, several name changes and numerous expansions. Commonly called Fraser Mills\, it was also the Canadian Western Lumber Company\, and until it closed\, the Crown Zellerbach Company. The mill employed labour from all over the world\, giving a start to many Sikh and Chinese families who contributed to the settling of Coquitlam\, and at one point employed large numbers of French Canadians who settled Maillardville. The mill brought in a multicultural population and also supplied the raw materials for many of the city’s buildings. It is an intrinsic part of Coquitlam’s foundation.

They were born in London\, England to parents of Nigerian and Zimbabwean descent\, and raised in the picturesque seaside town of Weymouth\, Dorset. At the age of 13 Tonye moved to Canada\, first to Prince Albert\, SK\, then on to the city of Dawson Creek\, BC. Upon graduation Tonye attended the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre Program. \nTonye’s style\, like their gender\, is fluid (or at the very least non-binary) – but can be described as Soul/Neo-Folk/R&B​\, and although unique – they have been likened to folx like Lauryn Hill\, Ani DiFranco ​and​ Chaka Khan​. Tonye is a Much More Music​ Video Award recipient\, a steadfast fixture in their arts community – and the kind of singer/performer that turns heads wherever they go. \nIn early 2015 Tonye’s trajectory was interrupted by a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis​\, but the full stop came two years later\, when a car accident on an icy back road in the Peace Region left their spine fractured in six places. All plans were waylaid as they lay bedridden and isolated for months. In the fall of 2017\, Tonye parted ways with 604 Records & Paquin Artists and set out on a journey of self-discovery and healing. \nIn many ways\, Tonye has had to start over\, and they bear the scars to show it. They now refer to MS as the best thing that ever happened to them. A wake up call offering a new lease on life and more importantly\, a shift in perspective. Their purpose and vision are crystalline. To connect with audiences on a deeper level through intentional work\, and to use their presence to foster meaningful dialogue within communities. They are not only interested in taking music and art to traditional venues but also into schools\, community centres\, hospitals\, prisons\, and boardrooms. Places where art can heal\, start conversation\, and maybe even…. make change.

The park can be reached easily via Skytrain. Simply take the Millennium Line to its terminus at Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station\, and from there it’s just a few steps to the Park. \nTown Centre Park is an ideal location for an outdoor festival\, and indeed it plays host to a number of major events each year. This year\, Coquitlam’s free Kaleidoscope Arts Festival returns Aug 20-21.\nJoin us at Heritage Square from 12pm-4pm each day for Imagined Journeys. Learn about the wonders of travel and the people who record their stories through writing. Visit our exhibits in the Fraser Mills Train Station and the 1970s CP Rail Caboose\, and then create a spyglass craft and a comic strip with our template inspired by your real or imagined trips.\nTravel Story Time in the Mackin House Parlour each day at 1pm. Recommended ages for story time is 3-8 years old but everyone is welcome.\nFree\, no registration required.
