DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024 from 2:00-4:30PM for the exhibition reception of Rebecca Bair: Where the Light Meets My Shoulder at the Art Gallery at Evergreen. We will also celebrate the release of the essay brochure that accompanies the exhibition. This colour brochure includes a poetic response by artist Erika DeFreitas that captures the essence of Bair’s artistic intentions when sharing her work within community. The brochure will be available for purchase ($5.00 + GST). \nLight refreshments will be served. Remarks will take place at 3PM. This event is wheelchair accessible. Pay parking available on-site\, easy access from Lafarge Lake-Douglas College Skytrain Station. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION\nWhere the Light Meets My Shoulder is a solo exhibition of recent work by interdisciplinary artist Rebecca Bair. While primarily working with photography\, Bair uses a multitude of mediums to expand the possibilities of representation. Over the past five years\, the artist has developed a style that reflects her experience as a Black woman living on Turtle Island. Her work upends how Blackness is often (mis)represented and honours the complex\, varying experiences of people of African descent. Bair tenderly gathers symbols of Blackness that are specific to her as an individual and that embody a deep love and care for herself\, her community and her heritage. Using recurring imagery of her coily hair\, the sun\, shadows and circles\, Bair plays with abstraction to negotiate what can be seen and what is withheld.

DESCRIPTION:Happy New Year!!! \nIf you’re feeling chipper\, there are a host of places to dispose of your Christmas tree this weekend. \nAfter de-decorating and clearing away any leftover tinsel\, Coquitlam residents can unload their Christmas trees at Mundy Park on Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. \nTrees can also be brought to Lot A at Town Centre Park between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. \nResidents who want to support Scouts Francophone de Maillardville can cart their tree to the Canadian Tire parking lot on Seguin Drive between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. \nIf you’re able to cut your tree into one-metre lengths and limit branches to 10 centimetres in diameter\, Coquitlam residents can also dispose of tree in green carts. The cart lid must be closed.

The brilliantly talented Quiring Chamber Players\, Reg Quiring\, (viola) and Rosemary O’Connor (piano)\, return for their 15th annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Evergreen. \nThis concert sells out – grab your seats today! \nHost Reg Quiring has performed as principal violist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra\, Quebec Symphony and Vancouver Symphony. He often performs as a soloist\, recitalist and chamber musician in concert and on CBC radio. As a chamber musician\, Reg has performed in the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival\, Vancouver New Music Ensemble\, Standing Wave Ensemble\, Vetta Chamber Players\, Turning Point Ensemble and Quiring Chamber Players. Reg and his wife\, Rosemary O’Connor\, are the Davidsbündler Duo and as such have recorded a CD of works for viola and piano and given concerts in many parts of British Columbia. He and his sister\, Angela Goddard\, founded and co-direct the Quiring Chamber Music Camp for young musicians\, now in its 18th year. Reg has served on the music faculty at UBC and the Vancouver Academy of Music\, and currently teaches at the Quiring Chamber Music School in Coquitlam. Reg studied violin with Lise Elson and viola with Donald McInnes at the University of Southern California\, and studied viola at the University of British Columbia with Gerald Stanick. Reg is the Artistic Director of the Coquitlam Youth orchestra at Evergreen Cultural Centre. \nPianist Rosemary O’Connor is an avid chamber musician who collaborates regularly with members of the VSO and Opera orchestras and co-produces at the Evergreen Cultural Centre’s Chamber Music Series. In this capacity she has performed with guest artists such as Ian Swensen\, Anita Krause\, Dale Barlthrop \, Francois Houle\, Andy Dawes\, Catherine French\, and members of the St. Lawrence Quartet. Rosemary has performed solo and chamber music concerts in the US\, Canada\, and Europe. Other concerts include Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York\, Music at the Vinyards in Napa Valley\, Pender Harbor\, Chintimini Chamber Music Festival in Oregon\, Sundays at 4 from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Rosemary currently teaches at the VSO School of Music and at her home studio in Coquitlam. Centering around Indian-American composer Reena Esmail’s ‘A Winter Breviary\,’ the program traces a journey towards the longest night of the year\, the solstice\, and honours the dark while celebrating the return of the light. \nThrough music of Sherryl Sewepagaham\, Juhi Bansal\, Joanna Marsh\, and the late Jocelyn Morlock – and arrangements of familiar tunes by Joanna Forbes\, Canadian folk trio The O’Pears\, Trombone Shorty\, and ensemble members – the ensemble will welcome the dawning light to illumine the darkness.  Known for their thoughtful programming and flawless execution\, the voices of musica intima will warm your heart. \nABOUT MUSICA INTIMA\nFounded in 1992\, musica intima is a collaborative and conductor-less vocal ensemble which has championed Canadian music on stages around the world\, and garnered a Western Canadian Music Award and three JUNO Award nominations across ten commercially released albums. Their most recent collaboration with Cree composer Andrew Balfour\, NAGAMO\, seeks to forge a new path towards the decolonization of the choral arts. \nGrassroots beginnings took musica intima to international renown by pushing the boundaries of traditional choral performance and offering new perspectives on ensemble singing.  One of Canada’s most esteemed vocal ensembles\, musica intima’s shared leadership model allows the twelve members to exchange ideas freely and  explore their individual musical creativity. \nAs musica intima seeks to decolonize their musical practice\, they increasingly turn to collaborations with Indigenous artists from a variety of disciplines\, including choreographer Olivia C.
