SUMMARY:The Art Gallery at Evergreen presents "Wayfinding"
DESCRIPTION:Wayfinding\nNovember 14\, 2020 – January 31\, 2021\nThe exhibition Wayfinding brings together recent work by local artists Leanne M. Christie\, Sara Graham and Devon Knowles\, who live and create art in response to their cities—Coquitlam\, Port Moody and Vancouver—and the urban architecture that makes up these spaces and others like them. Through mediums such as oil painting\, photography and experimental stained glass\, the artists consider the language and materials of city building. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Exhibition:\n\n\n \n\n\nHave you lately found yourself walking along the same routes in your neighbourhood time and time again? These familiar spaces\, already well trodden\, have become sites for repeated investigation under the restraints of the global pandemic. You might have started looking a little closer\, noticing previously unseen details\, documenting your surroundings with a fervour formerly reserved for exploring new places encountered on holiday. This practice of walking\, of slow looking\, of being in relation to your surroundings is a practice as old as humankind\, and for many artists this way of “being in the world” is central to creative practice. This is true of Leanne M. Christie\, Sara Graham and Devon Knowles\, whose art explores a common interest in (to borrow Christie’s concept) conversing with the urban environment. Author Rebecca Solnit describes how “walking is a mode of making the world as well as being in it\,” and the same can be said of art.  \nThrough mediums such as oil painting\, photography\, experimental stained glass and casting\, Christie\, Graham and Knowles consider the language and materials of city building. They look closely at the city—its architecture\, infrastructure and detritus—refashioning their discoveries through colour\, patterns\, shapes and expressive renderings. Each pushing toward abstraction\, they respond to their rapidly developing surroundings and the speculative possibilities of the built environment. These artists’ individual ways of being in the world are communicated through their art\, which at the same times feeds back into the world as it is shaped by humans.

Born in Montreal\, QC\, he grew up as a middle-class kid in Bowmanville\, ON. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force when he was 18 and attended the Royal Military College. His time in the RCAF took him across Canada\, completing basic training in Chilliwack\, BC; earning his wings in Winnipeg\, MB; and serving out of Halifax\, NS as a tactical navigator. During that time\, Erin participated in search and rescue missions on Sea King helicopters and learned French. \nAfter 12 years of service\, Erin retired from the military and spent the next decade working in the private sector as a corporate lawyer. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors for the True Patriot Love Foundation\, a charity that serves veterans and military families across Canada. \nHe has been elected to represent Durham three times\, first in a 2012 by-election\, then in 2015\, and 2019. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade before becoming Minister of Veterans Affairs\, a beleaguered file he successfully turned around within 10 months at the end of the Harper government. \nAfter serving as the Conservative Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs for two years\, Erin is now the Leader of Canada’s Conservatives. \nErin is married to Rebecca and they have two children\, Mollie and Jack.

Please call 604-664-1636 ext. 0 to book.\nPrintmaking is the art of replication. A seed and a woodcut plate live in parallel; they are both the DNA for replication. From this DNA\, variations occur: leaves on a tree vary depending upon their exposure to light\, water\, or other environmental effects; and the prints of a series are affected by the amount of ink\, pressure and even the temperature of the day. I create my plates with a mind to encourage the chance of minor variations. For me\, these variations make each print more alive and unique. DESCRIPTION:Photography and Sculpture in the Leonore Peyton Salon\nPlease note: the Leonore Peyton Salon is a multi-purpose space; therefore\, viewing times are limited. We welcome individual and core bubble visits to our exhibition spaces by appointment. Please call 604-664-1636 ext. 0 to book an appointment. \nMy photography often captures traces and evidence of human presence while observing the human landscape. I am particularly curious about what spaces tell us about the lives of people when people\, themselves\, are absent. \nPhotography is my medium of choice because it provides an opportunity to capture the everyday moments that may go unnoticed by others. \nThis exhibition consists of three bodies of work: Unobstructed Views\, A Memory and Collected Sentiments. These images explore the dimensions of humanity\, in particular\, the topic of mortality. By using imagery collected from cemeteries in several different countries\, some paired with skyscapes\, the viewer is encouraged to consider the emotional qualities of being human in life and death. \nIn natural settings and light\, my imagery explores the vulnerability and fragility of the human landscape. As with all that lives\, things will come to an end in time\, but perhaps not all is lost. It may be that the beauty\, sentiment and purpose remain\, and time is not forgotten. \nMy photography focuses on the temporary existence of time and space from moment to moment. By looking at what may be left behind\, I explore the change and transformation that takes place to shape the surroundings. \nCurrently\, I am exploring and pursuing my interest in botanicals as an extension of human expression with sculptural art that combines my photographs with diverse mediums\, such as resin\, clay and wood. \nwww.lauraclark.ca \nInstagram: @laura_marie_clark

DESCRIPTION:Presented by ScotFestBC and SFU’s Centre for Scottish Studies\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nLive from Vancouver\, Victoria and points throughout BC and the world\, ScotFestBC and SFU’s Centre for Scottish Studies presents an online night (via Zoom) to celebrate Robert Burns songs\, poetry and brilliance. \nFrom the comfort of your home\, don your best Scottish attire and join champion piper Jack Lee\, accordion player Mary Ross\, Dr. Leith Davis\, fiddlers\, reciters and haggis-stabbers as we weave through an online night of poetry\, friendship and fun. Hosted by Mike Chisholm of ScotFestBC\, the evening will include a random draw for a bottle of whisky from Macaloney Distillery ($130 value)\, a $250 gift card from Tartantown and “background check” prizes for the best home set decorations. Haggis for the “Address to a Haggis” provided by The British Store in Surrey\, which is also providing git card prizes. \nIt’s all free. But registration and a Zoom account is required in advance (tickets are limited). Once registered\, you will receive an email before the event with the access code. We encourage everyone to decorate their space for a Scottish evening. Judges will be viewing your screen to determine prizes. \nThis event is free\, but any donations to ScotFestBC is welcome.
